battletech assault mechs

Battletech Assault Mechs - Well, they've never really been forgotten - you can trace quad 'Mechs back to the 3140s with the introduction of the Hell's Horses Quadvis (and man, those 'Mechs ever ride!). But Quad 'Mechs, though they certainly exist and some of them are still notable, are easily forgotten. Why is this?

Maybe it's because a quad 'Mech ruins the entire image of a MechWarrior. 'Mechs often appear as avatars of their pilots but are made of metal and myomer, armed with more weapons than a battalion in today's army and capable of leveling a city block with one press of a cricket. If the outside thing is this four-legged animal, it is a bit difficult to personify the person inside.

Because of this, Quad 'Mechs remain fairly rare compared to their two-legged counterparts, but there are also in-universe reasons why Quad 'Mechs aren't seen more often. Being rare and unique meant that technicians often didn't know how to work on them, and it also meant that spare parts were hard to come by. It's easy to get a spare arm for a Centurion, but a little harder to get a spare leg for a Jaguar. You need a direct connection to the factory where the 'Mech is made, which means Quad 'Mechs usually only saw service at the highest levels of each military.

It was also unpopular with the pilots... you know, weird. You didn't have a fuselage to rotate, and all the quads didn't have turrets to compensate. No arms or hands means you can't really interact with your environment in any way except to get out of it, and on top of that, no arms means no armored weapons, which severely hampers firepower. . .

Besides, everything is necessary on the quad. Sure, if you lose a leg, you're not as useless as a two-legged 'Mech, but losing an arm still allows most mechs to run to safety. The loss of a leg severely hampered the quad 'Mech's mobility, leaving them unable to escape if the firefight went badly for the home team.

That's not to say that quad 'Mechs weren't without advantages. Unlike other 'Mechs, Quads could dance side by side in a sort of crab walk (although the design was more canine than crabby) and had very stable firing platforms (noted by their pilot ability bonus of -2 when all legs are fully engaged. -). functional). Quads are also shorter than most 'Mechs, which allows them to hide from terrain that leaves other 'Mechs partially exposed.

However, Quad 'Mechs are rare in both fantasy and real life. Only two Quad 'Mechs have appeared in any BattleTech video games – the Scorpion in MechWarrior, and the Tarantula in MechWarrior 2 – while the rest are rarely mentioned in the novels.

So I felt it necessary to give due respect to these big four legged brutes. Grab some famous quads and then you can provide me with your favorite and unique quad 'make designs.

Of course, I have a soft spot for this 'Mech. Not that I need to use it or anything (like I said, Quads are notoriously absent from any BattleTech video game) - I just like the look of the thing. As if a modern APC stuck a delicate leg out and tried to walk away from its problems.

I also love the design. A PPC and an SRM-6 are nothing to sneeze at (at least in the 3020), and the Scorpio's speed and ample armor mean it can serve in a variety of combat roles. Things got better after the Reseen designs appeared in 3067, though the SCP-12S version gets rid of the PPC for the LBX-10 making it completely ammo dependent.

Give me the SCP-10M with its heavy PPC and vertical firing LRM-10. Yes, it looks like it belongs more in anime than BattleTech, but damn, it looks good.

Now, if you want to talk about 'Mechs as walking tanks', it doesn't come close to Goliath. This thing is, literally, a tank with sprouting legs. On the plus side, that turret means you can shoot. any direction. Side by side, it looks like a recently slaughtered military giraffe.

The Goliath isn't bad, as far as 80-ton Invasion-era Legacy War 'Mechs go. A cruising speed of 64 kmph and an armament of two LRM-10s and a PPC put it in line with other 80-ton 'Mecsh' of the era. He also saw some prominence in fiction thanks to a brief appearance in Warrior: Riposte.

The Reseen design improved things a bit, giving it a more "beast of burden" look than a tank with quadrilateral illusions (which is technically an Italian word I'm reusing because it sounds cool). I like the GOL-5D variant, but that's only because I'm a sucker for rotary autocannons.

When I first saw the tarantula in MechWarrior 2, I thought, "Cool, four-legged mech!" Then it died on a random PPC farm and I thought this thing was a weak piece of !@$%.

Tarantula is a scout 'mech. It gives the Spider a run for its money with 8 jump jets, a running speed of around 130 km/h, and an armament of 2 medium lasers and a Streak SRM-2. It also has a ton more armor than the Spider. So why is the spider more popular than the tarantula when this thing really looks like an arachnid?

Probably because tarantulas look weird. I don't want to pilot it, even though it's a pretty cool scout 'mech.

Now let's move on to the quad 'matches that might actually sow some controversy. Burgess may have four legs and all the weapons on his torso, but those weapons are fierce. A pair of ER big lasers backed up by the LBX-20 is enough to give any 'Mech a hard day.

On top of that, the Barghest was one of the first quad 'Mech designs to actually look significant. He has the posture of an angry dog: full and ready to pounce. Additionally, the design evolved in a much better direction, with heavier Gauss rifles, Ultra AC/20s, ER PPC, and eventually light PPC and MML mounting.

I have a confession: I loved MechWarrior: Dark Age. It's not fantasy, mind - the whole HPG blackout and all these random factions made it weird. No, I liked 'Mechs, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

But Thunder Fox is pretty cool. It's a war horse 'mech straight to my heart. It's cheap, it's well armed, and it's well armed. You can build an army of these bad boys and take someone out of the interior and still clear the C-Bills.

Of course, the art and overall design make the Thunder Fox look much faster than it actually is. Top speed is 64 clicks (which isn't exactly stellar for a 55 ton 'Mech) with a trio of jump jets to turn it around if it's pointed in the wrong direction. He only has a ton of ammo for his Light Gauss Rifle and Streak SRM-4, so he's not fully equipped for prolonged engagements.

But I have to admit that the Thunder Fox looks fantastic. If I had to ride a quad, this would be the quad for me. So, since this is the "general" section of the forum and has a sub-section specifically for mechs, I thought I'd ask a question. Give my opinion on this matter.

Or any other "normal" mechs. Not to mention 2x ER PPCs, 2x UAC/10 and 2x Artemis-IV LRM-15s is a pretty impressive loadout. Another plus is that it is 100-ton with JJs.

I think another reason is reading the Mechwarrior: Dark Age novels and every time a mech appears in a book, something is dead.

Mine should be Warhawk (as Pariah Devlis suggested it's the "Reaper" of the battlefield).

Battletech Assault Mechs

Easily one of my favorites. I did terrible things to people with Hellstar in Dark Age.

My favorites are split into two categories because when I saw this thread I thought "Do I have to pick just one?!"

There are five attack mechs that I love and these are in no order Highlander (please meet back so you can DFA), Conqueror, Mauler (what I need to say about this iconic mech from MW2: Merc box. ), Direwolf and my last attack Fav is the Kodiak, a big clan mech that isn't an omni, sure it might have some heat issues, but it has enough firepower and speed to charge a Thunder 100.

What! Damn Bishop I never saw your destructive art! I want to see the Annihilator more than any other attack, especially if it looks good. The only thing I changed was to make it taller, I remember feeling like I was
