This SeaRey-N836SR is owned by the Flying Fish No Limits Flying Club in Lakeland, Florida. Flying Fish will train you to get a single engine seaplane rating - but so will hundreds of other flight schools. Right now, he introduced me to SeaRey's Adventure model with a 100hp Rotax 912 engine and standard three-pack flight instruments. (The Tavares, Fla.-based manufacturer also makes an Elite model that comes with a 115-hp Rotax 914 and Garmin G3X Touch avionics.) The large canopy of the SeaRey is an eye-catcher. It can be flown with open or closed canopy. But the comparison ends there. It is, after all, an amphibious aircraft, equipped with wing floats and mechanisms that open to facilitate water entry. The Rotax 912 sits row-style on the wing behind the cockpit, open for all to see. The nose of the SeaRey serves as its hull, so there is no room for an engine there. This prop provides a high thrust vector that causes the airplane to nose up initially when you reduce power, or down initially when you add power, the opposite of what you experience in a Cessna. That can bite some pilots, especially when making a circuit, Hinote says.

Not without many hours, that is. Insurance costs are prohibitive for seaplane operators to rent planes to solo pilots, and so most of them simply don't. Those who allow pilots to test their aircraft impose strict requirements.
